About 1440 Indian River Road

Sea Captains Home 1888 USA: March the 'Great Blizzard of 88' begins along the East Coast, shutting down commerce and killing more than 400 souls. At the same time in Washington DC, Miss Susan B. Anthony forms the organization 'Congress for Women's Rights'. Up in Downeast Maine the maritime community was still settling in to being called Maine. Just decades earlier they knew themselves to be part of Massachusetts. The world was changing, and people were having to change right along with things! Mariners in Maine were making money hand over fist, hauling ice, granite, lumber and produce. Captain Edgar Drisko had been sailing the Northeast Atlantic Coast and Europe for decades. Prior to 1888 he decided he would settle along the lower Indian River, just across from the mill, and the feed and grain store which later would become known as Grange Hall. He picked the site because it would have been a short journey by water out to the open ocean where his ship would have been moored. Up the river he would have been out of the strong forces of the mighty Atlantic and its horrendous Nor'easters. Something he could not do while sailing to make a living. 1888 Captain Drisko builds his forever house on the Indian River. Living in the house until he passes away and his son Merton Drisko takes ownership until in 1961 he passes the home on to his daughter Cora Drisko Gray. In 1974, Cora, Granddaughter to Edgar sells the house to the current owners. For nearly 50 years the current owners have maintained the original home and made some improvements, never getting too far away from what Captain Drisko once dreamed of and turned into reality. Now it's time to turn the helm over to another. This home and attached original barn are magnificent, the river and grounds are breathtaking, and the history is riveting. More memories are just waiting to be created. Is this what you have been looking for?
